Restrictions in Diet for Kidney Disease Patients at Christmas

How should they have a happy and satisfied holiday without aggravating their illness conditions? Here are some tips which can help kidney disease patients eat healthy on Christmas.

Turkey and chicken in the Christmas meal is fine, kidney disease patients can have turkey, but it is better to cook turkey by yourself because the turkeys sold on markets are often high in salt and fat. While cooking turkeys, limit the use of table salt and salty marinades. And remove the skin from the bird to reduce the fat content. Roasting the chicken or turkey in traditional method is a wise choice.

In the Christmas season, what dishes should be avoided by or modified for persons with kidney disease? Ham, rice and gungo/any peas, soup, ackee and salted fish/mackerel, salt pork/beef, sorrel with ginger, soursop juice, egg nog, fruitcake/pudding/any cake at all, fried dumpling/festival, wine, alcoholic beverages, tofu and foods containing coconut milk.

Soy sauce, ketchup are high in sodium and should also be avoided. Ginger, coconut milk (water and jelly) and salt substitutes should also be avoided because they are high in potassium. you can use natural seasonings such as onion, scallion, garlic, thyme, pimento, pepper, lime/lemon, and fresh vegetables instead of salt, powdered seasonings, soy sauce and ketchup. White/granulated sugar or honey should be used to sweeten instead of brown sugar, molasses and wet sugar.
